Pub trivia night, sorted. Here are 30 Aristocrat facts about the company and the pokies it made famous, from a 1950s Sydney workshop to the Lightning Link era.

Every fact below was checked against company records, court documents, research reports or trade press, listed in the sources at the bottom. Where the record is fuzzy we have said so, or left it out.

Aristocrat facts: the founder and the early days

  1. Aristocrat dates from 1953. That year Len Ainsworth took charge of his family's Sydney engineering business and switched it to making poker machines.
  2. The family firm started out in dental gear. The Ainsworth business was set up in 1933 to make dental equipment, two decades before the first pokie rolled out the door.
  3. The name came from a salesman. Collectors' records credit company salesman Tom Lavelle with suggesting "Aristocrat" as the name for a new machine in 1955.
  4. The first production machine was the Clubman. It was a three-reel mechanical machine for NSW clubs, followed around 1956 by the Clubmaster.
  5. The founder built a second pokie company. After leaving Aristocrat in the 1990s, Len Ainsworth founded Ainsworth Game Technology, and in 2018 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia.
  6. Aristocrat has been on the ASX since 1996. That is the year it listed and took the name Aristocrat Leisure Limited. More on that in our full history.

Aussie pokies by the numbers

  1. NSW led the way in 1956. In September 1956 the NSW Parliament allowed poker machines in registered clubs, the first Australian state to do so.
  2. "Pokies" is short for poker machines. The name goes back to early machines that used playing-card symbols, and Aussies have never let it go.
  3. Australia has a big slice of the world's machines. The Australia Institute estimates Australia has about 18% of the world's poker machines, with a tiny share of its population.
  4. Most of the world's pub and club machines are here. The same research puts about 76% of the world's poker machines outside casinos in Australian pubs and clubs.
  5. NSW has around half of the nation's machines. The Australia Institute counted 91,675 machines in NSW, roughly 48% of Australia's total.
  6. Western Australia does it differently. WA does not allow poker machines in pubs and clubs, so its gaming machines are found only at the Crown Perth casino in Burswood.
