If you have walked through an Aussie club or casino any time in the last decade, you have heard Lightning Link before you saw it. Lightning Link is the Aristocrat family that turned a cluster of glowing coins into the most copied bonus on the gaming floor: land six or more, they lock in place, and you get three spins to add more.
It launched in June 2015 with four themes, grew to a dozen in the US (with extra Australian-only titles), spun off the even bigger Dragon Link, and in 2026 finally made its first online appearance overseas. This guide covers how the Lightning Link pokies play, what each main theme does differently, where to play free, and the honest answer on Lightning Link online.
How Lightning Link plays
Every Lightning Link theme shares the same three building blocks: a regular base game, a free games feature that changes from theme to theme, and the Hold & Spin bonus with four jackpot levels. The games run on 5×3 reels, and at launch Aristocrat offered 50-line versions at 1c and 2c and 25-line versions at 5c and 10c, so the same theme can feel a little different from one bank to the next.
The base game also lands bonus symbols (coins, pearls, lanterns, depending on the theme) that carry credit prizes. On their own they do nothing much. Get six or more on screen at once and the real fun starts.
The Hold & Spin feature, step by step
- Land six or more bonus symbols anywhere on the reels.
- Those symbols lock in place and every other position spins on its own.
- You start with three spins. Every new bonus symbol that lands sticks and resets the counter back to three.
- The feature ends when you run out of spins or fill the screen.
- Each locked symbol pays its credit value, or a Mini or Minor jackpot if that is what it shows.
- Fill all 15 positions and you collect the Grand.
Mini and Minor are generally fixed amounts tied to the denomination, while Major and Grand build as people play. If you want the long version, with the maths in plain English, read our Hold & Spin explainer.
Lightning Link themes and what makes each one different
The four originals arrived together in 2015. Aristocrat now lists twelve themes for the US market, and Australia got a few of its own. The Hold & Spin works the same in each, so the free games are where the personality lives.
| Theme | Setting | Free games twist |
|---|---|---|
| Sahara Gold | Desert, camels, pyramids | One of the 2015 launch four; free games built around a pick screen and stacked wilds |
| Happy Lantern | Chinese lanterns, koi, dragons | Launch-four sister to Sahara Gold with the same pick-style free games |
| Magic Pearl | Underwater, pearls, sea life | Big Reel: the middle three reels merge into one giant symbol |
| High Stakes | Sports cars, diamonds, cash | Big Reel, same as Magic Pearl |
| Tiki Fire | Polynesian torches and masks | Wilds with multipliers that stack up on a single line |
| Heart Throb | Romance, roses, hearts | Multiplier wilds, the sister game to Tiki Fire |
| Bengal Treasures | Tigers and jungle treasure | Mystery symbols that can reveal bonus coins |
| Moon Race | Space race, astronauts | Stacked premium symbols, no low-paying royals on the reels |
| Best Bet | Horse racing, jockeys, trophies | Stacked premium symbols, paired with Moon Race |
| Wild Chuco | Wild West outlaw in Mexico | Mystery symbols, paired with Bengal Treasures |
| Eyes of Fortune and Dragon's Riches | Asian luck: tigers, dragons, gold | Wilds that expand to fill the whole reel |
Australia also had local-only titles such as Magic Totem, Fire Idol, Mine Mine Mine and Raging Bull. You might see a game called something like Best Money mentioned online, but we could not find it on Aristocrat's own Lightning Link list, so we have left it out.
History and trivia
Lightning Link was led by designer Scott Olive, whose studio HRG now makes games for Aristocrat out of Australia. Hold & Spin style features had existed in rougher forms before, but Lightning Link is the one that made it stick. Aristocrat announced the game on 10 June 2015, and it took out top spot on Casino Journal's 2015 list of most innovative gaming products.
Two years later the same team released Dragon Link, and multi-denomination spin-offs followed, including Lightning Cash. Aristocrat marked ten years of Lightning Link in 2025.
Lightning Link free: the Lightning Link Casino app
The easiest way to play Lightning Link free is the official Lightning Link Casino app from Product Madness, Aristocrat's social casino arm. It runs on virtual coins only, with no cash prizes, and it is rated 18+.
- The store listing names Lightning Link themes Tiki Fire, Wild Chuco and Heart Throb, plus Moon Race.
- It also carries Dragon Link, Dollar Storm and a big Buffalo line-up, so it doubles as a sampler for the whole Link family.
- Coins come from the welcome pack, daily rewards, missions and levelling up. Ignore anyone selling a coin generator; those are scams.
Cashman Casino, another Product Madness app, also lists Lightning Link and Magic Pearl. Our Lightning Link Casino app guide covers devices and setup in more detail.
Lightning Link online: the honest situation
For ten years the answer was simple: Lightning Link was a land-based game, full stop. That changed in July 2026, when Aristocrat Interactive put Lightning Link High Stakes on online casino platforms in a number of US states and two Canadian provinces, followed by Tiki Fire in September 2026, with more themes promised.
Those launches are North American. We have not seen an Australian release, and sites aimed at Aussies that claim to have the original Lightning Link are usually showing a lookalike with a borrowed name. Gambling rules differ by state and country, so check what applies where you live. Our can you play Aristocrat pokies online page keeps this up to date.
What to expect when you play
Lightning Link is a feature hunter's game. Long quiet stretches are normal, and most of the excitement sits in Hold & Spin, where a screen that starts with six coins can fizzle out or keep resetting for a minute. Return to player is set by the venue within state limits, so it varies from one machine to the next. Pick a denomination you are comfortable with, decide your budget before you sit down, and treat the Grand as a nice story rather than a plan. If it stops being fun, our play-safely page is there for you.
Can't find it online?
Look for 5-reel hold-and-respin games where six or more locked bonus coins reset three respins and a full screen pays the top prize. We explain the honest situation, and which mechanics to look for, on our can you play Aristocrat pokies online page.
