Mr Cashman is less a single pokie and more a personality. He is a cartoon gold coin with a top hat, white gloves and a cheeky grin, and his whole job is to wander onto the screen at random and hand out a bonus. Aussie and Kiwi punters have known him for decades, and he is still one of Aristocrat's best-loved characters.
This page explains how the Mr Cashman features work, the base games he appears on, where the character came from, and how the free Cashman Casino app connects to it all.
How Mr Cashman plays
Underneath, a Mr Cashman machine is a standard 5×3, 20-line pokie. The best-known base games are Magic Eyes, Jail Bird, African Dusk and Jewel of the Enchantress, each with its own symbols and scatter. The twist is that Mr Cashman sits on top of whichever base game you pick and can trigger a bonus after any spin, win or lose.
On many versions you need to play the maximum bet, or add a small extra charge, for the Mr Cashman bonus to be active. Check the help screen, because playing without it means you are just spinning the base game.
The five Mr Cashman features
- Random Spin: Mr Cashman spins the reels for you and any win is multiplied, with ×3, ×5 or ×10 on offer.
- Choose a Feature: you pick between a credit prize or a batch of free games with a multiplier.
- Random Bonus: a straight credit award, multiplied by your bet per line.
- Match the Prize: a pick-and-reveal round where matching prizes pay credits or free games.
- Poker Machine: a little three-reel machine appears inside the game and pays a credit prize times your line bet.
None of these can be forced. That randomness is the whole charm: a dead spin can suddenly turn into a multiplied win because a coin in a top hat decided to wave at you.
History and trivia
Most sources date the Mr Cashman machines to the early 2000s, with 2002 the year usually given for the US release. Some fans remember him from Aussie club floors a little earlier, but we could not confirm a firm date. Aristocrat later brought the series back as a wide-screen edition on its Viridian WS cabinet in 2012, with Magic Eyes, Jail Bird, African Dusk and Jewel of the Enchantress as the four base games.
The character outgrew the machines. In 2017 Aristocrat's social studio Product Madness launched Cashman Casino, a free app that uses Mr Cashman as its mascot. More on Aristocrat's characters and eras is on our history page.
What to expect from Cashman pokies
Cashman pokies feel busier than a plain 20-liner because something can happen on any spin. In practice most features pay modest amounts, with the occasional multiplied hit that makes the session. Return to player on venue machines is set within state limits and varies between venues. Treat it as a bit of fun with a set budget, and if it stops being fun, our play-safely page is there.
Where to play Mr Cashman free
The official home of the character online is Cashman Casino, a free social casino app by Product Madness that uses play coins only. Its listings include African Dusk, one of the classic Mr Cashman base games, alongside many other Aristocrat titles. Game line-ups change with updates, so check the app's lobby. For other options by device, see our free Aristocrat pokies guide.
