50 Lions pokies hold a neat place in Aristocrat history: released in October 2002, it was the first of the company's 50-line games. Set on the African savannah, it is loved for a free games feature that piles Diamond wilds onto the reels one game at a time.
How 50 Lions pokies play
It is a 5-reel, 3-row game. The original machine offered 1, 12, 25, 38 or 50 lines, with 50 being the signature setting.
- Diamond (wild): appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 and substitutes for all symbols except the scatter.
- Protea flower (scatter): three or more start the free games.
- Lion: the top theme symbol, joined by savannah animals and card values.
The free games feature
- Three or more protea scatters award 10 free games.
- On each free game, one extra Diamond wild is added to reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 for the rest of the feature.
- The wilds build up quickly, so later free games can show a screen full of Diamonds.
- An extra 5 free games can be won once during the feature, for a maximum of 15.
Symbols and pays
Pays vary by version and bet, so check the paytable on screen. With 50 lines, stacks of lions or a reel full of Diamonds can connect across many lines at once, which is where the game's bigger moments come from.
History and trivia
Collector records date 50 Lions to October 2002 on MKVI hardware and note it was the first of the 50-line games. An online adaptation followed around 2012. It sits in the same era as King of the Nile and Pompeii, and it paved the way for the many 50-line games that followed. Our history page has the wider story.
What to expect when you play
Expect lots of small line wins in the base game and a feature that gets stronger the longer it runs, so the last few free games are where things can happen. Plenty of features still end quietly. Results are random and the return is set by the venue within state limits. If it stops being fun, see our play-safely page.
Where to play 50 Lions free
Heart of Vegas, the official Product Madness social casino app, names 50 Lions on its app store page. It uses virtual coins only, with no cash prizes, and rosters can change. See our Heart of Vegas guide and the free Aristocrat pokies page.
